I got to speak with Dresses member Jared about the band’s bouncy tunes, their creative music videos and ukuleles.

First off, you’re a duo. And the one question everyone wants to know, is—are you dating? But I won’t ask that. But, how long have you known each other? How did you meet?

We’ve know each other since December of 2011, hung out for the first time in January of 2012. We went to high schools that were close by and Timothy was in a band at my high school. I knew of her but it wasn’t until 2 years later that we actually started talking and working together.

How long have you been a band?

I’d say since January of 2012.

I’ve been listening to a few of your songs, and they all seem so bouncy and happy. It’s been great listening to them in the dead of winter. How would you describe the sound of your music?

That’s a hard one… I’d say in the most general of terms, “indie pop”, but that could mean anything. We weren’t really going for a certain sound when we wrote/recorded these songs. They kind of just are what they are! I’d say there’s some beach-y vibes, some rock influence, pop influence… It’s all a little different!

“Sun Shy” is yet another happy bouncy song. What similar(or out of the box) bands/musicians have inspired you along the way?

We both have been and are inspired by such a wide variety of artists, that song specifically we wanted to go for more of an electronic feel. We may have referenced foster the people or passion pit somewhere along the way as an influence for that song.

I just watched your music video, “Painting Roses.” First off, is that a ukulele?!? This is happy music if I’ve ever seen it. And the video is very artistic, are either of you the mastermind behind this?

Yes it is a ukulele! I play it with a capo on the 4th fret for this song. I wish we were genius enough to put all of that together!  A friend of ours, director Tim Hendrix, was the mastermind behind that whole video. He’s amazing.

Second video down—“Blew my Mind.” Seriously, your videos are some of the best I’ve seen. They’re so creative. Do you have a right hand videographer who you collaborate with to create these beauties?

This video came from the brains of directors Jess Dunlap and Dannel Escallon! We have been very lucky to have people step up to the plate with amazing ideas and pull them off better than we could have imagined.

Your band seems like the prime example perfect for the spring and summer festival circuit. Have you been to SXSW or notable festivals?

Not yet! SXSW was an option this year, but we decided to go with this upcoming tour instead!

Time for some fun ones!

Name three things you need on the road: toothpaste, music, ear plugs

One thing you’d be surprised to know about us: we used to date! (To answer your question/not question earlier :P)

Current musicians/songs you can’t get out of your head: foster the peoples “coming of age” and volcano choirs “byegone”

Lastly, for music junkies, both fans and strangers alike, what can they expect to hear at your show at Mac’s Bar in Lansing, MI on Tuesday, March 18th?

We will be a 4 piece that night and will be playing most of the songs off of our album! And maybe a cover or two as well.
